9 December 2021Meet Nurul Syahirah Abd Samad, Boustead Plantations Berhad’s first woman mill engineer!
Of Orang Asli descent from Suku Kuala, Nurul Syahirah is here with one mission – to prove to others that gender-centric profession is a thing in the past.
Nurul Syahirah is currently stationed at our Trong Palm Oil Mill in Perak. With an intention to break gender perception in the male-dominated industry, Nurul Syahirah takes pride in what she is doing and strongly believes that gender should not dictate one’s career path.
Nurul Syahirah has always had an interest in the technical and mechanical fields, having spent her childhood assisting her father doing technical works. However, dealing with machines and mill instruments is only part of her day-to-day routine. Nurul Syahirah is also tasked on various managerial duty, such as assisting the mill manager on workers’ welfare and stakeholders’ management – just to name a few.
The Johor-born lass has a bigger aim for the future – to become the first female mill manager in Boustead Plantations Berhad, and possibly climbing the ladder higher. With strong support from her manager and coworkers, Nurul Syahirah is always enthusiastic to learn and develop new skills to prepare herself for a bigger role in plantation industry.
Nurul Syahirah is one of the many women appointed in important positions in our operations. We believe that a person’s value is based on his or her merit, rather than gender and social background. As we progress with our empowerment agenda along the principles of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG), we hope that Nurul Syahirah will continue to be a source of inspiration to women as well as the Orang Asli community.
