To ensure a safe and healthy working environment, we have established a comprehensive Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) management system throughout our operating units, driven by the dedication of our OSH Coordinator and guided by the Terms of Reference (TOR) of the OSH Committee.

The OSH Coordinator is a new appointment created in 2023 to comply with the new requirements of Section 29A of the Occupational Safety and Health (Amendment) Act 2022. The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) has successfully trained and certified 79 employees as OSH Coordinators during the first quarter of 2023.

This appointment is essential for ensuring that the OSH Committee functions effectively, including acting as the committee's secretary, conducting Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment and Risk Control (HIRARC) assessments, workplace inspections, medical surveillance, OSH training, accident reporting, and accident investigations, among other duties.

The company has issued an HIRARC Procedure in accordance with the Guidelines for Hazard Identification, Risk Assessment, and Risk Control (HIRARC) published by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Malaysia.

The OSH Coordinator carries out HIRARC assessments for all work activities involving both internal and external employees, including contractors, across our operations in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. This involves identifying hazards, evaluating risks using the prescribed risk matrix (high, medium, and low risk), and establishing suitable control measures to ensure a secure working environment. Any forthcoming operations will adhere to the same HIRARC assessment process, requiring successful completion before commencing any work.

We respect the diversity of our employees and are committed to cultivating a workplace environment that empowers our employees to realise their full potential.

At the same time, we respect the rights of every employee including our migrant workers and are focused on ensuring that our employees are not impacted by all forms of discrimination and harassment.

We have in place a range of talent development and training programmes that provide solid prospects for growth as part of the Group’s Learning and Development Policy. During the year, our employees were able to take part in the following training programmes:

  1. Code on Corporate Governance Talk
  2. Core Competencies Workshop
  3. English for Business Communication Skills
  4. Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) Seminar
  5. In-House Training provided by Estate

In line with our commitment to human rights protection, Boustead Plantations Berhad acknowledges and respects the rights of our employees including migrant workers. We understand that migrant workers may be exposed to a higher risk of exploitation during recruitment and employment process, and thus has taken the necessary steps to protect their rights.

Our Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) on Recruitment and Employment of Migrant Worker(s) provides a set of guidelines to establish a responsible, fair and ethical recruitment of all migrant workers within our plantation operations.

The SOP, which was adopted in September 2022, reinforces our commitment to ethical recruitment and effectively reduces risks of abuse of migrant workers. The SOP governs the ethical requirements and procedures on recruitment process of migrant workers, covering aspects - amongst others - on pre-departure, arrival and post-employment, with emphasis on our ‘zero recruitment fees’ policy.

Our longstanding commitment to the environmental, social and governance principles strengthens our obligation to equal treatment of workers without any discrimination in employment.

Boustead Plantations Berhad is committed to resolving conflict and/or dispute over land through engagement and consultation with the affected communities and other relevant institutions. As a responsible plantation company, we recognise the importance of establishing a healthy affiliation with parties and communities in the vicinity of our operations.

We have put in place an action plan in resolving matters arising from land dispute involving our operations.
